Kingdom Living: What It Means to Be a Disciple in Today’s World
Feb 07, 2025
Living as a Disciple in the Modern Age
What does it truly mean to be a disciple of Jesus in today’s world? In an age of distractions, cultural pressures, and shifting values, following Christ requires intentionality and unwavering faith. Kingdom living is more than just attending church or knowing Scripture—it’s about embodying the teachings of Jesus in every aspect of life.
Jesus called His disciples to “seek first the Kingdom of God” (Matthew 6:33), and that call is just as relevant today. Being a disciple means walking in obedience, growing in spiritual maturity, and carrying out the Great Commission by making disciples of all nations (Matthew 28:19-20). But how does that look in our daily lives?
The Characteristics of a Kingdom Disciple
-
Total Surrender to Jesus
A disciple lives under the lordship of Christ, allowing His will to guide every decision. This means aligning your thoughts, actions, and priorities with the heart of God. True discipleship requires giving up personal ambitions in exchange for God’s greater purpose. -
Walking in the Power of the Holy Spirit
Jesus promised His followers that they would receive power through the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:8). Kingdom living means walking in this power daily—allowing the Spirit to lead, convict, and empower you to live righteously. -
Boldly Sharing the Gospel
In a world that often opposes biblical truth, disciples of Jesus are called to be light in the darkness. This means boldly sharing the gospel, standing firm in faith, and not conforming to the patterns of this world (Romans 12:2). -
Living in Community & Making Disciples
Jesus didn’t call us to live in isolation. Discipleship is about walking alongside others, sharpening one another, and building up the body of Christ. True disciples actively engage in mentoring, teaching, and equipping others to grow in faith.
Challenges of Kingdom Living
Living as a disciple isn’t always easy. We face spiritual warfare, rejection, and moments of doubt. However, Jesus assured us, “In this world, you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world” (John 16:33). Through faith, perseverance, and reliance on God’s strength, we can overcome obstacles and live victoriously.
