Healing the Brokenhearted: Understanding God's Path to Soul Restoration

In this blog, we’re diving into a crucial but often misunderstood aspect of the Christian journey—healing from trauma and finding restoration for the soul. God created us as holistic beings, made up of body, soul, and spirit, and He desires for us to be healthy and whole in each area.

When we experience trauma, our souls can be wounded, affecting not only our thoughts and emotions but often our physical health as well. Let’s explore God’s desire to restore us and bring healing to our broken hearts.

The Parts of the Soul and How Trauma Impacts Each One

The soul is made up of four essential parts:

  1. Mind – How we think
  2. Will – How we choose
  3. Emotions – How we feel
  4. Identity – Who we truly are

Unfortunately, most people experience some level of trauma in life, which can create lasting effects on our souls. This trauma can make it difficult to fully step into the life God has for us. The Bible refers to this as a “broken heart,” and Psalms 34:18 and 147:3 remind us of God’s desire to heal the brokenhearted. When God heals our hearts, He reorients our lives, helping us walk fully in His plan.

Understanding the Sources of Trauma and Their Impact

Trauma can stem from many sources, including abuse, neglect, accidents, or even chronic sin. These painful experiences often lead us to develop misconceptions, such as feeling that God is punishing us, that we’re inherently bad, or that we’re beyond hope. These twisted views can impact our lives, leaving us with lingering shame, guilt, and condemnation.

Yet, the truth is that God is a loving Father who longs to heal us (John 10:10). When we allow God to restore our souls, we can live out His plan without the limitations of our past hurts.

Jesus’ Approach to Healing the Soul

Many people within the church community don’t know how to address unresolved trauma in others. Often, individuals with broken hearts are told simply to pray more, believe more, and read their Bibles more.  When Jesus encountered people with broken hearts, He demonstrated God’s power and brought healing and freedom to their souls.

Freedom means being able to respond to God as He created us to be. Jesus not only healed physical bodies, but also brought healing to the spirit and soul, freeing people from shame, guilt, and condemnation.
